Community Happenings

A listing of local previous and current events related to substance abuse prevention and recovery.

Southside residents hopes to reduce the stigma of mental health  and substance addiction with Beech Grove CDFC.
This year, National Prevention Week was May 12-18. The CDFC is promoting NPW at the Beech Grove Public Library in their main showcase through May 20. The CDFC offers a free quarterly adult program, sponsored by Drug Free Marion County, called “Youth Substance Misuse & Overdose Prevention.” The program gives parents the resources necessary to talk with their youth about the negative impact of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on young developing minds, as well as knowledge on overdose, the signs of overdose and how Naloxone (Narcan) reverses an opioid overdose.

Strengthening Families Graduations during the Month of May

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk and general population families. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly improve parenting skills and family relationships, reduce problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills. (Photos taken Auntie Mames)

Drug Free Marion County is pleased to announce the successful Strengthening Families Program 10-14 yrs graduations from three of DFMC partnering agencies: St. Paul AME Church, Emmaus Christian Church, Auntie Mame's Child Development Center  and  Amberwoods Apartments. If you have any families interested in the Strengthening Families Program please contact

Drug Free Marion County would like to introduce our newest board member:

Jennifer Cianelli

Why did you decide to join the board of Drug Free Marion County?

What drug- and alcohol-related issues are of particular concern to you?

What has been the most rewarding experience for you as a member of the board?

What are some of your interests/hobbies when you're not working or volunteering?

I decided to join DFMC because of the overall mission of advocacy, prevention and education related to substance use.  After spending years as a school based counselor and more recently working with individuals in crisis it is evident that substances touch and negatively impact so may lives.  I believe DFMC is on the "frontline" providing excellent programs to assist individuals with creating healthier communities

The biggest concern is related to barriers to treatment and Indianapolis capacity to assist individuals who make the decision to enter treatment.  Barriers include transportation, insurance, overall support received outside of treatment, financial issues, and untreated trauma.  As a city we tend to address these short term as funding allows and unless someone has insurance or can afford treatment out of pocket, there are limited options.

Meeting individuals who have the same overall goal related to developing healthier communities, being exposed to more work systems and how those systems overlap/work together.

I have been married almost 19 years, husband Rick,  and have two children; Emily 16 and Rowan 14.  I LOVE music and can be found listening to anything from Zydeco to classical.  I love puzzles, playing board games/cards, reading and being around my friends and family.
