The Walgreens Corporation has changed its corporate policy and is now choosing to sell alcohol in its stores. As a result, Indiana has been inundated with license requests for Walgreen stores. Statewide, 177 license requests have been filed; 29 in Marion County. The type of permit requested in Marion County would allow for the sale of beer, wine and hard liquor. Marion County already has 169 package liquor stores; 202 beer and wine dealer permits for convenience, drug, and grocery stores; and 105 liquor dealer permits for pharmacies, either in stand-alone drug stores or as part of a grocery store.
The ten stores scheduled to be heard on Monday March 1st have been continued. Eitght stores that are located in Indianapolis or Marion County have been reschedulred forl April 19th. Two stores, one for Beech Grove and the located in Lawrence have been continued until May 3rd. 19 stores are currently scheduled to be heard on March 15th. Community groups need to be prepared to voice any concerns at that time. The attached chart shows the location and current hearing date.
Drug Free Marion County believes that alcohol should be accessible to adults, however caution needs to be taken to limit that availability. Many of the Walgreen stores that are seeking alcohol sales permits are located on corners that already have signficant number of stores selling alcohol. Research has shown that the more alcohol sale locations increases the amount of crime and accidents that a community experiences.
